Reader’s Workshop

We’ve lost a lot of class time due to interruptions such as fieldtrips, a lock-down; a band event, etc…We’ve had to adjust our Outsiders schedule. Please see below for adjusted deadlines and note the changes in due dates.

We reading aloud and discussing elements of the novel during class time. All questions will be completed at home.

Chapters 1&2 – completed and corrected
Chapter 3 – completed and corrected
Chapter 4 – completed and corrected
Chapter 5 – due Fri, Sept. 27th - completed and corrected
Chapter 6 – due Mon, Sept 30th  - completed and corrected
Chapter 7 – due Wed, Oct 2nd  - completed and corrected
Chapter 8 – due Fri, Oct 4th    - completed and corrected
Chapter 9&10 – due Tues, Oct 17th
Chapter 11&12 – due Tues, Oct 23rd

READING JOUNALS
– preferably a coil ring notebook or a duo-tang
- contains reading log (students keep track of the books they read/abandon)
- should have a “WANT TO READ” LIST at the beginning of the notebook
- is used to record responses to material being read in class (Outsiders,
      choice books, poems, short stories, etc…)

Reading Log Spot Check – September 25 – completed (please check your students
                                                                   log to see if it was complete)
                                                                         - Spot Check #2 – Oct 31st

 WRITER’S WORKSHOP

Biography Assignment #1 - Class time was given for students to conduct interviews
                                           with their subjects
                                       - two classes will be given the rough drafts/peer
                                          conferencing/self-editing.
                                       - Final draft due – Oct 22nd

 Mystery/Suspense Unit

          - students will be listening to/viewing/reading various texts within the
             Mystery/Suspense genre completed and corrected

Young Sherlock Holmes Movie Assignment

                   – while viewing the film, students were asked to make a minimum of 10
                       responses on post-it notes – final draft should be in paragraph form
                       (one page in length) – Due Oct 21st
                   - students took jot notes on story structure and will complete a plot
                      line of the story – Due Oct 17th

 Mystery/Suspense Story – students will craft an original fiction piece
                                          - we’ll work through the writing process (pre-drafting,
                                            drafting, revising, and publishing)
                                         - class time will be given for the first three steps of the
                                             Process
                                          - each “step” is assessed, so it’s important that students
                                             complete tasks by assigned dates

          Tentative Due Dates
                   - 4 square – activating strategy sheet - Tues, Oct 22nd
                   - rough draft (self-edited) – Oct 28th
                   - peer conferencing sheet – Oct 30th
                   - teacher/student conferencing – Nov 4-6th
                   - final draft – due Nov 12th

 SOCIAL STUDIES

We are nearing the end of our Introduction to History Unit. The next unit will be Early Peoples.
