READERS’ WORKSHOP

Students will be spending a huge amount of class time reading (please see the blue sheets in your student’s binder). It is expected that they will read at home as well (as stated in the ELA outline). It is very rare that I assign separate assignments as homework. If students do not finish their work during class time, they need to complete it on their own time for the next day (or when specified). Our main focus for Sept/Oct is responding to text so students can improve their comprehension.

We are working on our large group novel study (The Outsiders). We are reading aloud and discussing elements of the novel during class time. All questions will be completed at home.

Chapters 1&2 – completed and corrected

Chapter 3 – be finished by Thurs. night so you’re not overwhelmed on your 5 day weekend (marking it on Wed.)

Chapter 4 – be finished by Tuesday (marking it on Wed.)

Chapter 5 – due Fri, Sept. 27th

Chapter 6 – due Mon, Sept 30th

Chapter 7 – due Wed, Oct 2nd

Chapter 8 – due Fri, Oct 4th

Chapter 9 – due Tues, Oct 8th

Chapter 10 – due Thurs, Oct 10th

Chapter 11&12 – due Tues, Oct 15th

 OUTSIDERS QUIZ – SEPT 25TH

OUTSIDERS UNIT TEST – OCT 21ST

READING JOUNALS
– preferably a coil ring notebook or a duo-tang
- contains reading log (students keep track of the books they
     read/abandon)
- should have a “WANT TO READ” LIST at the beginning of
      the notebook
- is used to record responses to material being read in class
(Outsiders, choice books, poems, short stories, etc…)

Reading Log Spot Check – September 25th

                   Writers’ Workshop

We use the 6+1 Writing Traits model in our class. Students’ pieces are assessed on their ideas/content, word choice, voice, sentence fluency, conventions (spelling/grammar), and presentation (final drafts only). Please see the handout in your student’s binder for more information.

Our first assignment is a short, biographical writing piece about a classmate. Students will be provided with a basic list of interview questions, time to interview their subject, and begin their rough drafts.
